As the Mets game gets started tonight in Texas, I am almost afraid to write what I am about to write. But I have to, because something amazing has been happening to the Mets, who have now won 6 games in a row and New York is cheering for them once again!
As I write this, a countless number of fans who thought the 2024 New York Mets were down and out, way before the All-Star break, have been given new hope. So for all the fans who thought there would be no baseball to watch this summer, things are looking up. There is plenty of more baseball to be played. 90 games to be exact, so don’t just go anywhere yet!
I recently read Bill Madden’s book “Tom Seaver: A Terrific Life.” Part of Chapter 8 outlines the origins of Tug McGraw’s now famous “Ya gotta believe” rallying cry, which he first said in the Mets clubhouse in September 1973. More than 50 years later, those of us who proudly wear the blue and orange, who remember moments of victory and defeat at Shea Stadium, and now at Citi Field, still turn to that rallying cry every game, every season.
The Mets are not going to win every game, and if the Grimace’s appearance was the stroke of luck we needed, we’ll take it. We often look for turning points in the season, a moment that can define a comeback or challenge the odds. We always look for those moments because we believe in our team and of course, because we want to win.
1986 was a long time ago. The 40th Anniversary of a World Series Championship is fast approaching. Indeed you, me, and all of the fans out there ‘gotta believe’ that this team, this season, this year will be different.
We never completely give up on our team. No matter how poorly they are doing, we keep them in sight in our rearview mirror. If you’re a Mets fan, than you know, “Ya gotta believe.” Let’s go Mets.
Hey John - Thanks for the follow! If you are a Seaver fan you should also check out the book, Tom Seaver and Me (if you haven't already). It's very insightful. I've read a few Seaver books and most rely on news clippings, but Pat Jordan's book shares personal stories about him and Seaver. Just a suggestion. Hope you are well.
